The English Short Title Catalogue (ESTC) is now freely available online from the British Library. The catalogue lists over 460,000 items published between 1473-1800. The Guardian and Observer Digital Archive has just been launched covering the period 1821-1975 for the Guardian and 1900-1975 for the Observer. This archive includes every page, article and advert published during these periods and from next year  it is hoped to extend the dates up to 2003.

COPAC vs. Google Book Search

COPAC searches over 32 million records from the combined catalogues of several major UK university research libraries, plus the British Library. These records cover the period from c.1100AD – to date, and so provide an easy but powerful search.
